“Gadis Kretek” (Cigarette Girl) is a Netflix Indonesia hit series that tells the epic story of Dasiyah, a talented artisan in the 1960s who struggles to find her place in Indonesia’s male-dominated clove cigarette industry. The narrative unfolds through a modern-day mystery as Lebas searches for a woman from his father’s past, unearthing a legacy of forbidden love and ambition. Based on the book of the same name by Ratih Kumala, the show became a historic international success, winning Best Mini Series-International Competition Program at the Seoul International Drama Awards 2024.
The series is celebrated for its immersive world-building that spans the 1960s, 1980s, and 2000s, anchored by a deeply researched visual aesthetic. To ensure authenticity, the production team meticulously recreated era-specific graphic props by studying historical typefaces, color palettes, and paper textures. They even went as far as replicating period-accurate printing techniques for the cigarette packaging, ensuring that every label and advertisement felt like a genuine artifact of its time. This dedication to detail allowed the props to serve as vital storytelling tools, grounding the sweeping romance in a tangible, historically accurate reality.
